The European Parliament adopted a resolution following the sharp worsening of the human rights situation in the run-up to and after the 9 August Presidential election.
The text adopted in plenary was tabled by the EPP, Verts/ALE, S&D, ECR and Renew groups.
The election was conducted in a flagrant violation of all internationally recognised standards. A majority of Belarusians consider Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya to be Belarus' real President-elect. As a consequence, Aliaksandr Lukashenka will not be recognised as President of Belarus once his term of office expires on 5 November.
The Members condemn the violent crackdown of peaceful protests and call for prompt EU sanctions against the officials responsible for electoral fraud and repression, including A. Lukashenka.
They recognise the Council as an interim representation of the people demanding democratic change that is open to all political and social stakeholders.
